BOARD MEMBERS
CKFTO started as an idealistic concept of an Occupational therapist and a parent of a child with special needs in 2008. It was brought to life by a dedicated voluntary Board of Directors, who set out to create a structure to provide clinical and financial assistance to families in a sustainable model.
Derek Luk Pat
Derek is a parent of a son diagnosed with Autism and is an advocate for the integration of special needs children into mainstream schools and the wider society.
A graduate of The University of the West Indies and Heriot Watt University and having worked across a number of Caribbean markets including Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean in industries that include manufacturing, import-distribution, retail, service and hospitality, Derek brings to the CKFTO over 20 years solid experience working with reputable regional and multinational companies at senior management and executive level.
Sofia Figueroa-Leon
Being the mother of a child with severe cerebral palsy, she is well aware of the lack of services for children with disabilities in the Caribbean, and through her philanthropic work has taken up the challenge to help those families. Born in Venezuela, Sofia has a BA in Business Administration and has studied languages in England and Venezuela.
She is the former Public Relations Manager for an International airline, Co-Owner of an Advertising Agency as well as a Certified Translator and Interpreter. She also holds former Vice President title of the Hispanic Women of Trinidad and Tobago (HWTT), Hope of a Miracle (HOAM), an NGO that provides children with life saving surgeries.
Sarah Ramcharitar
Sarah Ramcharitar (BSC., F.C.C.A.) has worked at all levels in the accounting field over the last 30 years in various sectors across the country from manufacturing, financial consultancy, training to motivational speaking. Her guidance, support and training in best practices has been invaluable to the organisation for the last 6 years. Her generosity of spirit and commitment to helping those most vulnerable in our society, further adds to the team.
Nicolas Hunte
Nicolas Hunte (C.A., F.C.C.A.) is a Chartered Accountant by qualification whose career comprises professional and managerial positions in the Energy, Media, Accounting, Auditing sectors over a period 25 + years. He has a daughter on the Autism Spectrum and over the years has developed a passion to help improve services available to parents and to help promote the causes of the Special Needs Community.
Elizabeth Aleong
A vibrant advocate for special needs children of Trinidad and Tobago, she has been a member of the Board of Directors for the last 9 years. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto, a former Marketing Director and currently self-employed in Project and Property Management operations.
Her experience coupled with her energy, expertise and passion to “make the world a better place for people with special needs” is a major contributing factor to the success of CKFTO.
Kelly Poon-Tip
Kelly Poon Tip was born in Trinidad. She holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education from Middlesex University. She’s currently self employed as a special and inclusive education teacher and reading specialist; providing remedial services to students that have difficulty with spelling and reading skills. In her spare time she goes to the gym. She believes that everyone has the ability to learn and that learning is a lifelong process.
THERAPY SOLUTIONS
Kim Amar
Studied Nursing at the University of Toronto and currently holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a Professor in the Critical Care Program at Centennial College in Toronto and teaches Post Anaesthetic Care Nursing to Registered Nurses looking to obtain employment in the Recovery Room of hospitals.
Formerly, she worked in Health Administration with a Toronto based paediatric therapy clinic (blueballoon) and was instrumental in initiating international therapy sessions around the world with the organizations' therapists.
